The popular host of the eponymously named CNN show has authored another book, Clark Howard's Living Large in Lean Times: 250+ Ways to Buy Smarter, Spend Smarter, and Save Money. Breezy and concise, the book offers readers plenty of money saving tips, as the title promises. Solid, tangible methods that actually work, unlike the vague, pie in the sky ideas found in so many other books in this genre. Still, there are few eureka! moments in Clark's book and many of the ideas here can already be found on the web for free.
Clark Howard is a star in the world of thrift, a likable personality who uses sound methodology to save his legions of followers money. Clearly, he delights in his own frugality. But there's a difference between being frugal and being cheap, and some of his ideas seem to lose sight of this. For instance, if you're thinking of buying roses for that special someone in your life, Clark suggests buying the flowers from a supermarket and delivering them yourself.
C'mon, now. I'm surprised he didn't also suggest stealing the flowers off a gravestone! For my money, the look of surprise on a woman's face when she opens the door and sees the deliveryman standing there with a dozen long stems is worth every penny, pinched or not.
Clark Howard does offer one novel approach to saving money on prescription costs, and with the price of non- generic medication being what it is today, that idea alone may be worth the price of the book.
In his book, Clark delivers real, meat and potatoes ideas on cutting costs in a wide range of subjects, from buying electronics to renting a timeshare. The pace is quick, the prose simple. Nobody will confuse the author with Dovstoyeski. And while a lot of the information in the book is available for free online, if you don't feel like spending hours scouring the web then Clark Howard's book may just be for you.
